Assistant General Counsel

As Assistant General Counsel, Mr. Watts provides advice to the following units and colleges:

  • Franklin College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Environment & Design
  • Odum School of Ecology
  • Auxiliary Services, Budget Division, Business & Accounting Services, Real Estate, Office of University Architects for Facility Planning, and Space Management (divisions of Finance & Administration)

Additionally, Mr. Watts has responsibility for the following areas:

  • Conflicts of Interest
  • State Business Disclosure
  • Real Estate
  • Bankruptcy
  • Taxes
  • Contract review, including Clinical Affiliation Agreements and Procurement

Before joining the University of Georgia, Mr. Watts practiced commercial litigation at King & Spalding LLP in Atlanta. Prior to that, he clerked for the Honorable Eleanor L. Ross at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. While in law school, Mr. Watts served on the Emory Law Journal and completed internships at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, the U.S. District Court, and the Georgia Office of the Attorney General. Before attending law school, Mr. Watts spent three years teaching history at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida.

Mr. Watts earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in political science and history from Florida State University and his Juris Doctor with High Honors from Emory University School of Law.
